Heading out on to a trail into the backcountry may seem like a “forget about it” to many who have an infant, but it doesn’t have to be so far out of the realm. The key to it is being smart, planning things out and ready for anything.
“Ninety percent of the injuries we see in the backcountry are operator error,” said Matt Cline, who led Hike it Baby’s first Emergency Trail Smarts course in Sellwood Park.
Cline has been a backcountry guide for around 17 years and in that time has worked for Outward Bound and search and rescue in the Mt. Hood area. Cline, who has a 2-year-old named Amiya, spoke to the small group for about an hour covering things like the 10 essentials you want to have in your pack to what the most common injuries he sees in the backcountry and what to do in these cases.
“With kids there are things like burns, bee stings and cuts most commonly, especially with little ones. There are less sprains and strains because even if a child were to fall down a steep hill, their bodies have some much more cartilage because they are still growing. Toddlers are amazingly resilient.”
He also went over layering, talked about hyper and hypothermia and addressed things like choking. “When a toddler is in a backpack you want to have a little plastic mirror handy so if she is eat in her pack and chokes on something, you can see what’s happening if they are suddenly quiet.”
Following Cline’s talk the group did about a 45 minute walk through Oaksbottom Refuge and then finished up just as a rain storm started.
