Meet Jeri! She competed in the HiB30 Challenge this June and won a prize from our sponsors at OnyaBaby. She and AnnaGrace (age 15 mos.) hiked 40 miles respectively with HiB Livingston!
Was this your first Challenge? If yes, how did it motivate you to get outdoors? If this was not your first Challenge, how was it different from your previous experience?
This was our third challenge but the first time that we met our goals! It was also our first challenge with our new local branch. Previously we had hiked and walked all on our own. Not coincidentally the weather was much more pleasant for being outside and both of us were in much better health compared to March. All in all, June was a much better month for us.
What was the biggest obstacle you faced during this Challenge and how did you overcome it?
I am not sure what our biggest obstacle was in June. The weather was fairly good (a lot of rain but totally workable) and we had opportunities to get out. I guess the biggest challenge was getting our dog out with us as she is shy around people and dogs. I had a goal to get her on the trail more but I just wasn’t able to make it all balance out.
Where was your favorite hike this month? Why is it your favorite?
My favorite hike has become our weekly HIB Livingston hike at Kensington Metropark. I love that we are building a community. We have many moms and babies that have become “regulars.” It is so fun to see the babies grow into toddlers and to hear about the families’ adventures beyond HIB.
I started our branch to build a new community of support for AG and myself (and other families) and it is a joy to see that community develop.
How easy or hard was it to get out and accomplish the miles you achieved? Any advice for families who think they could never do 30 miles in 30 days?
It was much easier for us to get out this time! The weather was certainly a variable but more importantly, as a result of the March challenge my daughter has developed a love for being outside and for having a walk around the neighborhood every night. Every. Night. She has been smiling at the trees since she was a tiny baby and her love for nature has only grown since then.
If you could describe your HiB30 Challenge this June in 3 words what would they be and why?
Inspiration, community and energy. The group experience (including the online community) is inspiring and encouraging to me. Seeing so many other families in so many different settings is really motivating. Community from both the online group as well as the local connections within our branch. Energy because being outside has been so restorative for me. My health and my mind have both taken hits during the first year of parenting my daughter and being with her outside has offered respite and rejuvenation. We always come home feeling lighter and brighter than when we went out, even if we are tired.
Do you already have big plans for the prize that you won? Tell us how excited you are about your win!
Yes! So excited! I just got our branch loaner Onya in the mail today and my daughter and I already love it! She asked to go for her evening walk in it tonight (on my back) after having developed a preference for her BOB stroller over the past few weeks. So to have our own personal Onya is a wonderful blessing as she is getting bigger and we are spending more time outside! Thank you! I can’t wait to tell parents about how comfy and light it feels when I see them on hikes and beyond!
Remember, if you want to be entered to win awesome prizes like those from our amazing partners at Onya Baby all you have to do is register for the next HiB30 Challenge!
