Meet Westie! She competed in the HiB30 Challenge this June and won a prize from our sponsors at Superfeet. She, Courtney – age 4, and Clayton – 9 months hiked 46 and 33 miles respectively with HiB Santa Clarita!
Was this your first Challenge? If yes, how did it motivate you to get outdoors? If this was not your first Challenge, how was it different from your previous experience?
This was our first challenge. The thought of 30 miles in 30 days seemed very doable, then when I knew Courtney could walk farther than a mile, it was fun to go check out longer hikes.
What was the biggest obstacle you faced during this Challenge and how did you overcome it?
Keeping Courtney interested, since she’s 4 – I didn’t want to carry her knowing she could walk it just fine, but if she was the only kid walking in the group it was hard to keep her wanting to hike. I found out quickly that if she had a friend the hikes went much better, and lots of snacks and water. I even let her take my phone once so she could take pictures of whatever she wanted, that seemed to help also. My 9 month old was easy, just put him in a back carrier and he was happy.
Where was your favorite hike this month? Why is it your favorite?
Rustic Canyon, Nazi Ruins, “Murphy Ranch” in Pacific Palisades. The kids had a blast exploring all the abandoned buildings, climbing on the roof of one of them, and taking the steep 500 stairs down the mountain. It was also a cooler day here in Los Angeles and the trail had lots of shade.
How easy or hard was it to get out and accomplish the miles you achieved? Any advice for families who think they could never do 30 miles in 30 days?
Some days it was a little hard to get out and walk, we actually missed about 5 days ? . I had a friend in the challenge, so we kept each other accountable and planned walks on days we didn’t make it out to an actually dirt trail. Getting your friends involved in the challenge helps you to reach your goal.
If you could describe your HiB30 Challenge this June in 3 words what would they be and why?
Outdoor family fun…That’s what it was for us!

I was so surprised my name was drawn for a prize, I have never tried Superfeet, so I am excited to feel them out and walk with cushions on my feet ?
