Registration for the Hike it Baby 30 September 2020 Challenge is Open!Hike it Baby 30 product image

The Hike it Baby 30 Challenge is Hike it Baby’s bi-annual fundraiser that encourages families to get outside more for 30 days. It happens twice a year during the months of April and September.

Our April 2020 Hike it Baby 30 Challenge was underway as the COVID-19 pandemic was gripping the United States. To make the Challenge accessible, we opened up it free of charge to anyone who wanted to participate. The reality of the necessity of just being able to get outside in any way possible became the priority, and in many ways, helped solidify our mission, vision, and values and how we wanted to run this September’s Challenge.

We’ve done away with paid membership, and are keeping the Challenge free of charge and open to anyone who signs up for a free account with Hike it Baby.

Help More Families Get Outside

The Hike it Baby 30 Challenge is also one of Hike it Baby’s largest fundraisers and the event itself is made possible through sponsorships and donations. While this event is open and free to anyone, if you are able, we encourage you to make a donation of any amount when you register.

Anyone who makes a donation will receive our Hike it Baby 30 September 2020 sticker!

To maintain our 501(c)(3) nonprofit status we are required to earn a portion of our revenue through donations and through direct support of events like Hike it Baby 30. Additionally, like many organizations, the fallout from COVID-19 has impacted Hike it Baby financially. Currently, after extensive cuts and budgeting, we are facing a deficit of $30,000 for 2020. While that seems like a very large number, with roughly 11,000 registered Hike it Baby members, if everyone gave $5 – the average cost of a Starbucks – we would exceed our goal.

Hike it Baby facilitates over 16,800 hikes a year for 275,000 families. A hike can mean anything from an actual hike on a natural trail to a park play meet-up or stroller walk. Each hike costs the organization $6.24, or a total of $104,832 annually, to oversee. That breaks out to almost half of our budget going directly towards supporting our in-person meet-ups.

Where else does your money go?

  • Creating resources
  • Develop programming
  • Advancing campaigns
  • Taking action to welcome more families outside, regardless of race, age, religion, gender, or financial standing
  • Protecting and sharing nature for generations to come

We need our community members to stand behind us and show us that they feel we’re worth supporting.

New this Challenge – B-I-N-G-O

This September we’re excited to introduce our new BINGO board! Throughout the challenge, cross off squares on your BINGO board for the chance to win a prize at the end of the month. Once you have BINGO, multiple BINGO’s, or a blackout board – be sure to share on social media using the hashtag #HiB30BINGO.

Everyone who registers for Hike it Baby 30 will automatically be entered to win our sponsorship prizes at the end of the challenge. Everyone who plays BINGO and uses the hashtag will earn extra entries.

Setting Goals

As we practiced in April, the goal of this challenge is simply to get outside.

A recent study released by Outdoor Industry found that just under half the U.S. population does not participate in outdoor recreation at all.

  • Less than 20 percent of Americans recreated outside at least once a week.
  • Americans went on one billion fewer outdoor outings in 2018 than they did in 2008. One billion!
  • Of the people who report they go outside, 63 percent report they go outside within 10 miles of their home.
  • Kids went on 15 percent fewer annual outings in 2018 than they did in 2012.

This isn’t about going for your best hike right now. If you do, we are cheering you on! But more than anything, it’s about taking those first steps outside. Whether it’s in the backyard or around the block. The goal is to get outside.

In light of this information and our mission as an organization, we encourage you to think about who you know that you could invite to join you in this challenge. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Hike it Baby, as an organization is not hosting in-person hikes. However, this is an incredible opportunity to take advantage of already curated ideas to get outside and invite your friends, family, and neighbors to join as well!
