Tonya SonstengMeet Tonya! She hiked with Carter (11 months) on July 25th for the Hike it Baby Hike On and won a prize from our awesome sponsors at Stearns!

Did you hike with a HiB group or did your family go solo?    If you hiked with a HiB group, which group was it?
We hiked with a HiB group  – Hike it Baby Austin

What hike did you conquer on Saturday, July 25th? What was your favorite part of hiking that trail?
Hike On – Walnut Creek, I was the hike lead. Carter and I met some great families and had a lot of fun. Walnut Creek is a great park with tons of trails, and lots of shade. The bonus is after we hike a couple of miles we go to the creek and let the kids splash around, which Carter really enjoys.

Did you have any obstacles to overcome to get out or while on your hike that day?
Unfortunately the park was VERY busy, there was a softball tournament and a mountain biking event. But we stuck to the smaller trails and still had a blast.

Why do you think hiking is a positive influence in our children’s lives?
I just love for him to be outside, like I was when I was a child. We didn’t sit in front of the TV or play on our tablet for hours. We went outside and played in the woods, and had adventures, and got dirty, and I loved it. I want him to want to be outside, and that’s why I’ve made hiking a part of our lives.

What is your advice for anyone who is contemplating hiking with their little ones for the first time?
Just to give it a try. We use the term “hike” relatively loosely, you don’t have to be super fit or have expensive gear. We just walk the trails and talk to other moms. I have met some great women as part of Hike It Baby, and they have become my friends.

Carter loves to be in the water, and a Puddle Jumper will be a great asset to us. It will give him a range of motion to feel free while he’s in the water and help as he learns to swim. We’ll be headed to the pool as soon as it arrives.

Thanks to our amazing prize sponsor Stearns for partnering with Hike it Baby!
