Meet Janet Vaudt from Hike it Baby Golden! She entered her son, Sam, in the HiB30 March Challenge and won a prize from NiteIze Vision!
Tell us about your favorite hike in the world!
I love Missouri Mountain – its one of Colorado’s many 14ers, meaning its peak is higher than 14,000 feet. It begins with beautiful, lush forest and then it opens up into this STUNNING valley that is loaded with alpine flowers! It’s like stepping into a painting.
Favorite Hike it Baby moment so far?
My favorite moment so far is very simple. I was leading a weekly stroll along Clear Creek and I had met about half of the other families on the walk. The conversation flowed easily among the group and it was very “zen”. Nobody was trying to impress anyone. Nobody was trying to be “right” in how to do this or that with their baby. My heart filled with the amount of openness and vulnerability was present in a group of mostly strangers.
What is the best advice for a new hiking family?
Even if your’e nervous about meeting other families on hikes, just do it. We are all in this together and the helping hands are so valuable! What better way to learn about hiking with your baby/children than to hike with other who have already done it?
What are your hiking goals for 2015?
Although I don’t have any specific hiking goals for 2015 other than to hike 60 miles in June for the Hike it Baby 30 June Challenge, its very important to let my new little walker gain confidence on trails.
Got a favorite trail trick?
Bring doggie bags and wet wipes. ALWAYS!
What is a hiking/outdoors accomplishment with baby that you are most proud of?
I’m proud of making my yes mean yes when it comes to leading hikes. Even on days that I would rather stay home in my warm house, I am ALWAYS glad that I follow through on my commitment. My son has been such a trooper – I’ve kept him awake during his naptimes more times than I can count, I’ve woken him up from a nap to get to a hike on time, I’ve taken him out in the snow and rain because I didn’t want to cancel a hike due to poor weather. But he always seems to have fun and he loves looking around and pointing at new things along the trails.
Why is it important to you to have your kiddo out in nature?
Anytime my son is fussy, I know I can take him outside and he instantly calms down. You can just see it in his eyes and his face how much he love to see, touch, feel, taste and listen to things in nature whether its a tree, a leaf, a pinecone, a stick, a rock, a bird. We live in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and we are surrounded by nature. I hope that my son grows to love being outdoors as much as my husband and I do.
What kind of gear do you always suggest people get?
YakTrax and/or hiking poles! Trails can get pretty icy here and with extra foot traction and poles I feel so much safer hiking with my baby on my back.
How has Hike it Baby influenced other aspects of your life?
Hike it Baby has transformed my life as a new mother by simply encouraging me to get OUTSIDE. I love the families I get to meet, and its so much fun to explore the beautiful Rocky Mountains from a toddler’s point of view.
What did you win? How stoked are you about it? how will you use it!?
I won the NiteIze Vision variety pack. These will be great for anytime I want to go running or hiking at night. I’m super stoked about using them while camping! Especially the LED dog tags so I can see where my dogs are at nighttime.
