Meet Kristen! She is a member of Hike it Baby Anchorage and her son Everett competed in the HIB30 Challenge this March and won a Garmin vívofit®!!
Tell us about your favorite hike in the world! “My favorite hike in the world is on Kauai at the end of the road on the North side of the Island. It’s called Kalalau Trail on the Napali Coast.”
Favorite Hike it Baby moment so far? “My favorite Hike it Baby moment so far was my first Hike it Baby hike. It was close to my house and I was determined to get out and do something with my son. My husband works in oil and gas and was the arctic coordinator for exploration season on the North Slope of Alaska this year. Once the ice roads were in, we knew he wasn’t going to be home for weeks. Basically, I am alone…a lot. So, I decided to give Hike it Baby a try and met wonderful ladies, got my energetic dog exercised, built my confidence as a new mom of a 4 month old, got fresh air, felt energized myself, and hiked 4 miles along a river in beautiful Alaska. It saved me.”
What is the best advice for a new hiking family? “Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and make a few mistakes in the beginning. It’s better to have gotten outside and show your children the beautiful outdoors.”
What are your hiking goals for 2015? “My goals are to get out at least once a week with my little one, if not more, and to go on two big hikes a month where my husband can join too.”
What is a hiking/outdoors accomplishment with baby that you are most proud of? “Summiting Baldy Mountain in Alaska when he was 2.5 months old.”
What is the most outrageous thing that has ever happened on a hike!? (Good or bad!:)) “A moose just appeared behind us and my dog went balistic. Luckily the moose wasn’t in a bad mood and went about her business.”
Why is it important to you to have your kiddo out in nature? “We live in a beautiful world, a beautiful country, and I want my children to know and understand nature so they grow to respect the environment and have a desire for outdoor adventures rather than virtual adventures.”
What kind of gear do you always suggest people get? “A water resistant/wind resistant carrier cover.”
How has Hike it Baby influenced other aspects of your life? “It has gotten me to lose the baby weight, interact with other women in my life to get them to join HIB, and driven me to plan my time wisely so I can go on hikes.”
What did you win? How stoked are you about it? How will you use it!? “I won a Garmin Vivofit and I am super excited!! I have always wanted an activity tracker and sleep tracker. I will have it on me at all times and use it to motivate me to be more active and get more and more steps in each day.”
Thank you so much to our HIB30 Challenge Partner, Garmin for this amazing prize!!!
