Tell us about your favorite hike in the world!
Turnagain Arm – there’s a spot to sit and enjoy the 180 degree view of the ocean. Gorgeous!
Favorite Hike it Baby moment so far?
Nothing specific- just the feeling of camaraderie and support during every single hike!
What is the best advice for a new hiking family?
It can be intimidating to get the little one geared up…it takes so much more time! But don’t let it stop you. Just take the time and ask for whatever help you need. Getting out is so important as a new mom!
What are your hiking goals for 2015?
My goal for 2015 is to average 30 miles a month. 30 miles seems to be enough that it can be challenging if I don’t make it a priority, but very doable if I stay focused.
Got a favorite trail trick?
Last summer, I bought a small camelbak daypack…I can easily carry 100oz of water, snack, phone, keys, a dipe, wipes, sunscreen, bug dope, and an extra layer if needed.
What is a hiking/outdoors accomplishment with baby that you are most proud of?
During HIB30 January – we made our 30 miles while visiting family in SD…temps were frigid-but we bundled up and went out in the single digits anyway!
Why is it important to you to have your kiddo out in nature?
So many reasons! But mostly because growing up,my family was not an outdoorsy one. I have just recently personally learned the love of the outdoors and the many benefits of nature. I want my daughter to grow up loving it and having the experiences that I never did.
What kind of gear do you always suggest people get?
Of course, make sure that your baby is appropriately geared up, but don’t forget about yourself! Good shoes and a way to carry water!
How has Hike it Baby influenced other aspects of your life?
HIB has helped create a family. Originally from the Midwest, I have often felt like an “orphan”…no family in state. I have lived in Alaska for almost 17 years, and it wasn’t until I started hiking with HIB that I felt I had the kind of network and friends that I had always been missing.
Thank you so much to our HIB sponsors at Klean Kanteen for the awesome prize!! Make sure you sign up for the June HIB30 to be entered to win more prizes like this!!
